1998-2000: Sponsorhip of Stephanie Cook – Olympic Gold Medal Winner of Modern Pentathalon, Sydney 2000
In 1998 I met Stephanie Cook whilst operating on an emergency aneurysm in Oxford. She was a house officer at the time. She explained she was trying to train for the Sydney 2000 Olympics in Modern Pentathlon but could not get funding nor a job that would allow her to continue her medical career and training.
I set up a 2 year research job in Guildford which I funded myself.
During that time, Stephanie was able to both continue her medical career, helping me clinically and performing research (getting some papers and presentations) as well as training which culminated in her winning Olympic Gold.
I was invited and appeared on “This is your Life” as someone who had been influential in Stephanie’s success.
